The United States Postal Service employees are, for the most part, efficient and friendly. There are many locations where you may buy stamps, packing materials, envelopes, and other related items as well as mail envelopes and packages. You may also deposit letters in freestanding blue postal boxes throughout the city. The times of pickup are listed on the box.
The website www.usps.com is a good source for complete postal information. The USPS toll-free telephone number also may be used for many questions, although it may take a while to reach a “real” person on the phone. Call 1-(800)-275-8777.

Special Services at the Post Office
Mail boxes in the lobbies at the four main stations may be rented, and you can pick up mail there with a key. You can use a box instead of having home delivery, or you can have both.
Express Mail Service is an expensive but rapid method of sending letters or packages within the U.S. and overseas. Priority Mail will deliver a letter or package within the U.S. in 2-3 days. Size and weight restrictions apply to Express and Priority Mail.
Certified and Registered Mail are two methods used to verify that mail has been delivered to its destination for a fee. Registered Mail can be insured, but it is not available to all countries. Certified Mail is for items having no real value and can only be sent within the U.S.
International Global Express Guaranteed and Global Express Mail (EMS) are two services available for mail to nearly 200 countries offering speed, reliability, and convenience.
Money Order: Do not send cash through the mail. Domestic and International Money Orders can be purchased in amounts up to $1,000 at any post office, but are available at many other locations, usually at a lower price. You must pay for a money order with cash at most locations. Other ways to send money are through Western Union or by purchasing a bank money order, a foreign draft, a cashier’s check or cabled through a major bank.
Mailing Packages: The cost of mailing a package depends on the weight of the package and the distance it will be traveling. Overseas packages are sent by airmail. Use a clean box without major printed areas on the surface when you do your own packaging. Do not use wrapping paper, string, masking tape or cellophane tape; instead use special packing tape. The post office sells boxes, bubble wrap and tape for your convenience. Check with your post office about size, weight and content restrictions and prohibitions. Individual countries vary about restrictions and forms required. Consult the website for more information.
Bound Printed Material, such as books and magazines, can be shipped within the U.S. at a special media rate. Less expensive than first class or priority postage, such mailings are delivered in two to nine days. Consult your local postal station.
Branches:
You can find branches in most grocery stores (like Meijer’s, Kroger’s, and Busch’s), as well as at other locations around town. You can buy stamps there and may be able to send packages and access other services.
Mail Delivery
Mail is delivered once a day Monday through Saturday. There is no mail delivery on Sunday or on holidays except Express Mail.
If you reside at North Campus or in an apartment, be sure your mailbox lists your name and the complete names of other people receiving mail at your address.
If you are leaving town for more than 3 days, you may submit a HOLD MAIL form to your mail carrier, the post office or on the website. The mail will be delivered the day you return. It is not advisable to let mail or newspapers accumulate at your door while you are away.
When you move, even within the city, remember to leave a change of address with the post office. You can also submit a change of address form online. Your mail cannot be delivered without a current address. The mail will be forwarded to you at no charge for about six months. After six months the mail sent to your old address will be returned to the sender.
Zip Code Numbers must be included with each address. Ann Arbor and Michigan zip codes can be found in the front pages of the telephone directory or online.
Mail and Packaging Shops
Consult the Yellow Book/Pages of the telephone directory or search on the internet under MAILING SERVICES to find privately- owned stores. They offer mail, shipping and package service for letters, packages, and even large items. These shops also sell envelopes, boxes, tubes, tape and provide FAX services. Their fee is added to the regular cost for U.S. mail, UPS, Fed Ex, DHL, air freight, or other delivery means.
